Porcelain Crowns and Bridges La Jolla | John & Tracy Taddey DDS
Porcelain Crowns and Bridges
John J. Taddey, DDS specializes in a wide range of cosmetic dental services that rebuild your smile. Two of these procedures, porcelain dental crowns and porcelain dental bridges, play a large role in Dr. Taddey’s comprehensive smile makeovers. These prostheses are natural looking, functional for chewing and speaking, and can last for a very long time if proper oral hygiene practices are observed.
Dental porcelain, or ceramic, is the preferred crown material of Doctors John and Tracy Taddey for several reasons.
Porcelain is white and translucent; consequently, it best mimics the color, texture, and sheen of natural teeth. Porcelain is also very durable, and can last for decades with proper care. Additionally, porcelain is very effective at protecting teeth from staining and acidic erosion.
Which Service Is Applicable to You?
Despite both being used to give you the smile you want, crowns and bridges both serve very different functions.
Crowns, also known as caps, cover the entire tooth in order to protect it. Crowns are generally used if too much of the tooth has decayed, if the tooth has been cracked, or it the tooth underwent a root canal therapy. These crowns are also used to restore dental implants. The goal of the crown, particularly porcelain crowns, is to protect and preserve an existing tooth while improving its appearance.
Sometimes, an existing tooth doesn’t need the full protection of a crown, but instead needs only a cosmetic improvement. In these instances, Drs. Taddey and Taddey may instead recommend a porcelain veneer. Veneers are placed onto a tooth and mostly cover its front surface.
A bridge, on the other hand, is used to replace multiple missing teeth in a row. These porcelain crowns upon a ceramic structure can either be anchored by dental implants or be secured to neighboring teeth with clasps. An implant-supported bridge will be permanent, while a bridge with clasps is removable. Removable bridges are also known as partial dentures.
